When Austin Bridge & Road, one of the leading civil contractors in the southern United States, secured one of the most significant contracts in company history, the reconstruction and upgrades of Interstate 635 and U.S. Highway 80 interchange in Mesquite, Texas, they knew who to turn to for equipment.
With the demands of this project, along with pouring an average of 150,000 feet of barrier and rail each year, the team needed a machine that could deliver consistent production while adapting to a variety of jobsite conditions.
The Power Curber 5704-D MAX stood out for its compact size, versatility, and 3D capabilities.
Shane Colley, Operations Superintendent, explained, “The smaller footprint and ability to transfer from left-hand pour to right-hand and vice versa really set it apart for us.” These features have allowed crews to work more efficiently in tighter areas and, in some cases, reduce the need for night work.
Our daily average production and productivity have significantly increased.

From the start, the 5704-D delivered results. Shane shared, “Our daily average production and productivity have significantly increased.” The machine’s design has also improved efficiency on the jobsite. With the auger positioned closer to the center, crews are able to work in tighter areas, while the stringless setup gives finishers more room to work. Together, these features have helped create a smoother workflow and increase overall productivity.

The TxDOT project involves roughly 165,000 feet of various types of barrier rail, with more than 130,000 feet placed on overpasses and interchanges. Tight working conditions, especially in the center of U.S. 80, make efficiency and flexibility a top priority.
The 5704-D has proven precise even on the most demanding pours. While slipping T80 barrier rail, measuring 4.5 feet high and 24 inches wide at the base, the mold ran extremely close to the bridge columns. Shane said, “The mold was so tight to the bridge column you couldn’t fit a piece of paper between the two.” The stringless setup made it easier to maintain accuracy without constantly adjusting stringline.
The 3D capability adds even more flexibility, allowing crews to handle tighter pours while maintaining quality across different applications. Currently in use on multiple projects across North Texas, the 5704-D supports production goals while delivering a consistent, reliable product.
Compared to previous competitive machines, the 5704-D is easier to operate and produces a uniform result, giving crews confidence on every job site. Looking ahead, Austin Bridge & Road plans to continue using the 5704-D in barrier and rail applications while exploring additional ways to leverage the machine.
Beyond the equipment itself, the team values their relationship with Power Curbers. “Power Curbers has shown that our needs are important to them,” Shane noted, pointing to the company’s outstanding customer support.
Once complete, the project will span approximately 5.45 miles, with construction continuing through early 2029. With years of work still ahead, the 5704-D will continue to play a key role on the job, helping deliver lasting improvements to one of North Texas’ most heavily traveled highways.
