The crews at Sportsmans Concrete often begin work at four o’clock. That’s four in the morning! They do so for a good reason: Arizona summers can get mighty hot, might early. Yet, those soaring temperatures shouldn’t make one think the state is not an amazing place to spend time outdoors. In fact, the folks at Sportsmans Concrete came up with the company’s name out of a shared love of outdoor activities like hunting, fishing, and just handing out together.

Sportsmans began when Buck Leavitt’s father decided to sell his business to his son in 2009. Buck and his partner, Cody Solomon, have been long-time friends, and working together was a natural decision. A few years later, a third pal and experienced paving specialist, Marcus Lemieux was brought in as General Superintendent. The three had been working in concrete since they were youngsters and friends in grade school.

Marcus explains that Sportsmans began during a downturn in the economy. Despite the not-so-rosy outlook, the firm has prospered, and the staff has grown to around 130.

Sportsmans’ increasing workload soon demanded additional equipment, so they purchased a used Power Curber machine. A few months later, they added another used machine; again, a Power Curber.

When the time came to purchase a brand new machine, there was no question which manufacturer would be their choice.

“Power Curbers Machines are easy to operate, reliable, and all that,” said Marcus. “But what made the decision so easy was the support we’ve always gotten from the company.”

He noted that Power Curbers professionals traveled to Sportsmans twice to hold training sessions on the machines. But being available at the touch of a cell phone has been critical because when a problem arises, you need answers now, not hours or days later. That could mean lost time on the project schedule and crews standing around waiting for work to resume.

“They’ve saved us numerous times, diagnosing old machines over the phone. That was the biggest selling point for Buch when he wanted to get another machine.” The new machine chosen was a Power Curber 5700-D, which proved to be an excellent selection.

“Right now, I’m on a job site where we’re going stringless,” said Marcus. “This will be the second project we’re using the new machine on.”
